the Reiki system. To most practitioners
lineage or "pedigree" is very important as it keeps the connection
to Dr Usui "pure"

Re-discovered Reiki in the 1870`s It is probable that he travelled
and learned languages, including Chinese and Sanskrit, to study
original manuscripts to try a healing formula.
In a Zen monastery he studied with an abbot who also was interested
in healing. In the Indian sutras he discovered a formula for
contacting a higher power that could provide healing. It did not
explain how healing is given but it did show the method for contacting
the higher power. Dr Usui decided to use this formula, and went to a
mountain to meditate for 21 days.
On the mountain of Kori-Yama he purified his body with fasting and
meditation. His aim was to follow the formula he had discovered to
contact the highest power, and then to receive knowledge about and how
to give healing.
Dr Usui set out 21 stones, discarding one each day. After
discarding the last stone he suddenly saw a beam of light rushing
toward him, it seemed to have an intelligent consciousness and it
struck him in the middle of his forehead.
At that moment Dr Usui saw Reiki symbols in beautiful coloured
bubbles. Each time he thought about a bubble he was attuned to that
Reiki symbol, receiving the knowledge needed to go with it. This is
how he received his Reiki attunement.

Dr Chujiro Hayashi formed the Reiki symbols into first, second and
third degree formats and introduced the initiation procedures. He also
kept records about his treatments in his Tokyo Reiki Clinic. Because
war seemed certain he decided to pass the Reiki method onto two women
as he thought they would be more likely to survive the oncoming war.
One was his wife the other was Mrs. Hawayo Takata

During her early life she worked hard helping her father in the
sugar plantations on Hawaii (her parents were Japanese immigrants).
She marred the plantation bookkeeper who died in 1930 aged 34.
Mrs. Takata then had to work even harder to support her two
daughters within 5 years she was seriously ill physically and had a
breakdown mentally. Soon after she traveled to Japan to relate the
death of her sister to her parents, and seek treatment for her ill
health.
In a Japanese hospital she was diagnosed as having gallstones, a
tumor and appendicitis. She was already on the operating table when
she herd a "voice" clearly state " the operation is not necessary"
This was so forceful that she asked the doctor what else could be
done. The doctor suggested the Reiki clinic run by Dr Hayashi. After
four months of daily Reiki sessions from two practitioners she was
completely cured.
So impressed by her cure she asked to learn Reiki. She was told no
because Reiki was by and for Japanese, but Dr Hayashi relented. He
wanted to initiate another woman other than his wife.
In 1938 in Hawaii he initiated her as his thirteenth ,and last ,
Reiki master. Mrs. Takata spent the rest of her life sharing Reiki.
She moved to California in 1970 and initiated 22 masters before her
death on 11th Dec 1980
Deceased as of 1984. She was the 10th Master initiated by Hawayo
Takata. She was told by Hawayo Takata to only train 3 people at the
Master level. Iris trained only 2 people at the Master level though,
her daughter and Arthur Robertson (her husband refused the
training). Iris taught Reiki I and II together and asked Arthur to
do the same.
